Hon. Ing. Yaw Osafo-Maafo hails from Akyem Awisa in the Eastern Region. He was educated at Awisa Presby Boarding School, Achimota School in Accra and the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi. He is an Engineer by training and profession, a Fellow of the Ghana Institution of Engineers and has successfully branched into Finance and carved a niche for himself as an Economist, Development Banker, Financial Analyst and a Statesman.

He established his credentials as a Banking and Finance leader by heading and successfully restructuring two (2) major Ghanaian developing banks; The Bank for Housing and Construction and the National Investment Bank (1979-1992).

Ing. Yaw Osafo-Maafo was a Member of Parliament for Akyem Oda Constituency from 1997-2009. He was appointed Minister for Finance and Economic Planning from 2001-2005 in the NPP Administation. During his tenure, he oversaw the dramatic turnaround of the Ghanaian economy within four (4) years. This accomplishment was internationally recognised and he was adjudged the best Finance Minister in Africa in the year 2001 by the "Banker Magazine".

From 2005 to 2006, Ing. Yaw Osafo-Maafo served as the Minister of Education and Sports. Notable among his numerous achievements in this Office were the Institutionalisation of Distance Education for teachers and the qualification of the Senior National Soccer Team of Ghana (Black Stars) for the first time in history to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

He was a founding Deputy Chairman of the Ghana Stock Exchange Council, Past President of the Executive Committee of the West African Bankers Association and has served on various corporate boards of institutions such as Nestle Ghana Limited, Merchant Bank Ghana Limited, NTHC Limited and National Development Planning Commission where he served as either a Board Chairman or Board Member. He was very instrumental in the establishment of Donewell Insurance Company and the Methodist Church, Ghana.

Ing. Yaw Osafo-Maafo is a Fellow of the Ghana Institution of Engineers and was elected by the institution to represent it at the Consultative Assembly which prepared the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

He was the Co-Chairman of the Transition Team representing His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the newly elected Government of Ghana in December 2016.

Currently, he is the Senior Minister in the Government of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo coordinating the activities of the various Economic Ministries.
